My Question for Soonim:

Many photos of Na Nun Dol – I am stone/stone fly are shown in your catalogues such as from 2014, Space 17-Incheon 2011 or Gimhae and many others rarely show the ceiling or how the cotton threads are attached to the ceiling or what support method you employ to hang the stones. I cant but imagine a very tall ladder climbing up and down a multitude of times. Even with an assistant the work of suspending the stones so carefully tying knots above the ground seems to be a tremendously physical undertaking, a commitment of time and energy as well as creativity, varied with each site’s conditions. And the way of handling and tying the cotton string may have evolved into your special method perhaps with a lattice you attach to the ceiling, or other such support system.  It may involve thought as well, or a thoughtful training, unless your way is to think not- just do as a discipline. Even in Wild Seeds in Suwon Korea 2012 where the ceiling area can be seen, the suspension method is not visible. The same in Memory of Space_Gujing 2017, in Passenger Terminal in Busan Port 2014, in Jangdo Yeosu South Korea 2019…..  So much that is invisible, not seen in the photos, can you speak to this, reveal a bit of this?

First of all, I want to apologize for making you wait a lot, as the link was replaced at the beginning of the meeting due to technical inexperience. Also, I deeply apologize for the sudden interruption of the meeting due to an engineer's mistake at the end of the meeting.

And even though your question focused on the technical aspects of <Nanun-dol>, I'm sorry I didn't go into depth at our seminar.

 

As I said before, <나는 돌 / Nanun-Dol> in Korea has two meanings. These are 'stones fly' and 'flying stones'.

At this time, the gallery that commissioned the installation work supported the ceiling structure. I first designed the shape of the structure, and a carpenter hired from the gallery installed another layer in the form of a wooden board drawing on the ceiling. A wooden board has hundreds of holes about 3 mm wide. I previously secured a small wooden stick to the end of the thread in a T shape.And I fixed it by inserting a small stick into the space in the hole in the ceiling. As you can see in the video, I fix the thread at the end of the ladder through the hole in the ceiling, and an assistant from the bottom grabs the thread one by one and fixes it to the floor. This is to prevent the thread from getting tangled when attaching cotton.Using a needle at the end of the thread, pass the cotton through and sew to secure the cotton. And if you tie a stone at the end and fix it, it is fixed vertically by gravity and installed without tangling the thread.

for <The Space 17 – Gimhae 2011> case, it’s also same process and the entire installation process was supported by Crayac Art Museum in Gimhae.

Installation time depends on the size of the space, but it usually took 3-4 days with 3-4 assistants.

 

for <Na Neun Dol; The Space 51-Daejeon2012> case is bit different.

The ceiling height was 13m, and the building was an outdoor steel frame structure (H13m x W50m x D10m). And it was a park with strong winds and a lot of floating population. So, I decided to start from the ceiling and only use the space more than 3m from the ground.

First, I had to make a wire net on the ceiling to drop the threads in a uniform width. I didn't want the wire to stand out too much in the eyes of people on the ground, and it had to be strong enough to support the weight of the stone and the force of the wind, so I used 12mm wire. I wanted the stones to sway in the wind outdoors, so I used feathers rather than cotton. This worked very well. I am very good at operating an aerial platform. The installation took 6 days with 4 assistants. It was installed with the support of the Daejeon Museum of Art.

IF you see process video of Nanun-dol for  <Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art, China>, you can understant better for process of <Nanun-Dol>. At that time, I worked with 11 Chinese art graduate students for one month in midsummer at Zhujang Museum of Art in Hongzhou.

 

For <The Space77- Memory of Space _ Gujing China>, At this time, the installation period was not long enough, so a ready-made wire net was used for the ceiling. The Museum purchased and installed a wire net I picked from the Guangzhou market.

 

For <나는돌 Naneun Dol; The Space 63-Busan> cace, The structure of Busan Passenger Terminal was made of steel frame. So, at this time, the end of the thread, the part that touches the ceiling, was prepared in advance with a strong magnet and installed. I installed alone.

For <The Space17 _ Jangdo, Yeosu>,  At this time, the installation method has evolved a lot. A black net was already installed on the ceiling of the museum. The length of the thread that matches the height of the ceiling of the museum, the loop at the end of the thread, cotton, and stones are individually packaged as a single product and prepared in advance in my studio.

At the end of the exhibition, each line is individually wrapped and stored in the boxs. If the ceiling height is the same, reinstallation is possible. Alternatively, they are designed to be installed in different locations by simply adjusting the length of the thread. In this way, installation time is drastically reduced and manpower required is reduced.
