Moon on Saltern

Some salterns still exist on Sido Island near Incheon.

The artist creates a large moon that rises during the day and shines in the sky by wiping the floor of the saltern where salt harvesting takes place as a result of sea, sun, wind, and human labor.

This project comprises a performance video for an onsite installation, which was presented at the exhibition Make the Flower of Salt Bloom in Sido in 2017. It was supported by the Incheon Foundation for Arts & Culture and planned by Installation Group Magamnews. As part of this exhibition that agonized over the beauty of creation and extinction, after the salt harvest was finished the artist wiped the floor of a saltern, of which there are only a few that still operate, for the entire day to reveal a circle on the floor tiles’ original color (black) that reflected the sky and visualize the moon at midday.

This is a place where sea salt farming is carried out with the sea, sun, wind, and human labor. In such an environment, the heart, sky, and moon disappear through the artist’s labor and momentarily float above the ground.
