Questionnaire for Docents of Oyster Land Project, as of May 14, 2018

Interviewer: Na Seon-yeop (PhD. candidate, art education, Gyeogin National University of Education)

Respondent: Kim Soonim

Q. Is there any specific reason for selecting cotton thread as a material in your work?

A. Cotton thread appears several times in my projects. It retains the original color of cotton without being dyed and is a traditional material used in daily life. When I was young, my family used it when making new cotton blankets that we sewed every season, so my mom and grandmother called it the ‘thread to sew blankets.’

Although cotton thread appears colorless, it preserves the color of cotton from when it was still rooted in soil. Furthermore, the thread can be used to produce objects such as fiber, and its essential function is to connect multiple objects so that they can be integrated as one.

In the project Oyster Land, the cotton thread embraces the stem and the entire work’s body. It is a ‘stem’ that connects the hidden underground zone filled with oyster shells to the workers’ labor, the heart of the seat that has offered land, oysters whose shells are converted into soil, and makes them grow outside the soil and reach toward the ceiling of the space.

It is ‘cotton thread’ that connects all things and operates as an object, which is able to hold the memory of the land from which they came, despite being anonymous and colorless.

Thanks for asking about its implication.

Q. What were your intentions when you presented the exhibition at Woori Museum of Art in Manseok-dong, Incheon, as opposed to other venues in different cities or regions outside Incheon?

A. I still remember how impressed I was when I first presented the project at the opening exhibition of Woori Museum of Art. The residents surrounded the project, looked at it, and became extremely excited. They must have passed the sacks of discarded oyster shells on the way to the exhibition, but they seemed so happy to see the oyster shells, which are typically regarded as trash, shine under the light without any fishy odor. Looking at the oyster shells that had been transformed from foul-smelling trash into shiny objects, they gave me many encouraging comments. Later, I heard that the villagers decorated their Christmas trees with oyster shells that year. (2015)

I felt that the history and dynamic culture of that place brought the project to life and helped it to grow, so I was honored that the Incheon Foundation for Arts & Culture decided to host the project.

The project can be kept alive if its story’s site becomes significant. It is possible that the story of far-flung ‘Manseok-dong’ is not applicable to that region alone. The labor of each head of household (regardless of their gender or age) is transformed into dreams and the land upon which we depend and stand. Through the eyes of an artist who discovers, reveals them, and allows them grow like vines in a space, we can rediscover the values that are buried underground. Having people hold such values in their minds by reflecting them onto themselves or their surroundings is an additional objective of exhibiting the project in various locations.

Q. Have you worked on any projects that focus on other regions in Incheon? If so, please introduce them. Otherwise, where do you intend to do so, and why?

A. Where artists stay has a large influence on their projects. It was possible to present Oyster Land because I resided, visited, and contemplated in Incheon, making it natural for the space to reveal its story to me. I think the memory of staying in Incheon for 13 years imbued the stories and colors of the place on which I stood effortlessly with an agency that permeated my projects.

Landed Ocean is one such project that expanded this concept after the exhibition of Oyster Land (the project presented for this exhibition) at Woori Museum of Art in 2016. By including a motion sensor and a faint LED light, the oyster shells would be illuminated in response to any outside viewer that approached it during the exhibition. This was the product of various experiments and attempts.

Moving ‘You’ on the Street; The Space32, Incheon Free Economic Zone. This project is a performance in a ghost town where people were unable to live, despite its purpose of providing housing, when 40% of the town was occupied by residents because of excessively high real estate prices in Songdo, Incheon, in 2010. A performer pulled a blanket on wheels, selected one place in this expensive town, and took a nap, all of which was recorded in videos and photographs. It received favorable responses in Busan, Japan, and Macau, places that suffer from similar real estate issues.
