"How do you feel Macau?"

                    2011. 02. 07 ~ 03. 06

I am crossing a Macau bridge alongside Frank, Alice, and May who came to greet me, after leaving the airport covered by a veil of darkness. When sparkling distant lights approach, the Macau night more brilliant than its day dances through a car window. Less than 30 minutes after getting off the airplane, I was first asked "What do you think or Macau?" After that, a lot of people asked me the same question during my residency stay. In fact, this is one question Macanese can ask any foreigner who visits Macau, and the one easiest to answer. But, I wish to reply to this question in a more earnest way: what I see, meet, feel, and remember here.

If I could not answer this question with ease, or was lost in thought, someone says to me that "Macau is small." This means because one day is enough to look around Macau you don't need to consider it deeply. However I always replied to this saying that "Macau is not that small." If I came here as a traveler, I would probably think like others that Macau is a small country. But, I am here to join the Ox Warehouse artist-in-residence program.

Although the period I will stay is short, I am here to work and meet people. The history and time left in Macau's narrow back alleys, the wind swept streets, and people living in the present like the past I realized there are lots of things left that l could not see. I thus feel Macau is large. Like others with little information on Macau, before staying here, I also considered Macau a famous resort city with luxurious casinos. When I met Frank, a Macanese in Busan, I discovered something I did not know. Talking with him I became curious about Macau.

The land was once under the control of Portugal, and belonged to China 10 years ago. Although its rulers have changed, the life of those living here has not changed. Many young people have Portuguese nationality, but they cannot speak Portuguese. They are unfamiliar and critical to the systems and policies of China. As a large number of youngsters work in the service industry for tourists, they are accustomed to consumer culture. There are also lots of young people who wish to leave here, not satisfied with this country where their grandfather's generation was addicted to opium, and their father's generation suffered from their parents.

I seem to discover something glittering in these young people. Fortunately, Macau did not suffer war in its modern and contemporary history. So many historic buildings and the indigenous culture are well preserved, and Macanese are usually generous to strangers and foreigners. They are never reluctant to recognize, embrace, and learn foreign things. Never complaining of any inconvenience in moving, they are well aware of the worth of their possessions.

Like Korea's young artists, Macau's have occupations to solve their economic difficulties after giving up their art work, or they give up their occupations for art work, and all of them go through conflict in what they have to select. While drinking with some of them, I saw verve in their eyes. They at times deplore having little choice, but they are my beautiful mentors, living with me in the same age.

Pledging to meet again, I left, but I can communicate with them via the Internet, as if they are beside me. What a blessing! I thus feel like this residency program continues. (Kim Soon-im)

비행기에서 내린 후 30분도 안되어 들은 첫 질문이 “How do you feel Macau?”

“Macau is small”

“Macau is not that small”
