Nature of Life by Kiki Denis

Nature of Life

(For Soon-Im Kim)

She is small and fragile

A sculptor, she says when you ask her to give you a purpose of being

When she is sad, she carves self-portraits with a pen or is it with a knife?

Striving unconsciously to fight mortality

On a piece of paper

Or wood

When she is happy, she makes cotton drawings of others

She is interested in faces, she declares,

The cracks on the cheeks caused by the mountain wind or by the salty freeze of the ocean

The lines at the edges of the eyes,

The oddments of past smiles around the mouth,

All,

omens of living

in one place

at a certain time

Sometimes she takes long walks and documents her encounters with stones, seeds, rivers

The ongoing current, she says, is what she is here for

And I believe her
