Staying

By Younjeong Park, Chief Curator of SOMA

This work by Soonim Kim is to show a process of becoming one with the space where she stays, representing figures with natural material. Her work is not to move an object by cutting it out   but to dig up the object and its memory of space, together. The time and space Kim brings may be for one a forum for healing wounds and for others something to bring a sleepless night. To this extent, Kim’s work has an intense visual impact and narrative.

In On the Road Kim presents a projection of a young migrant man from Eastern Europe, a building cleaner she met while in New York. After portraying him with wool and stitching, she set this at center of the venue, and then unfolded an installation linking natural objects such as thread and cotton to an artificial wall, highlighting the figure. Daniel, a young man in his 30s, uses a skateboard for transportation. He is a landscape often found in daily life in a megalopolis as an ordinary citizen who earns and spends small amounts of money every day. The artist nicknames the young man ‘dove boy’, recalling the dove, commonly found in a city, as a sacred creature. Feathers spreading like drawn lines on the back of his shoulders are protective layers wrapping him and objects enabling to overcome gravity, allowing the boy to adapt to the space. The space 53 shows cotton 20 meters long, symbolizing an eternal connection through weaving with the weft and warp in twists through the space, making us feel our bodies and eyes float.

Each strand of cotton falling from the ceiling has a very thin, pointed needle at its end, perilously touching the floor. This is a metaphor for precious connection, bearing a beautiful swaying signifying an encounter of two extremes as a principle of the world. As in a Yong-un Han’s poem, “Falling serenely down in the airless air, creating vertical ripples” the strands remind viewers of a state of non-action or non-doing with silence in movement or movement in silence. Dove boy’s body becomes one with the space through the thread of ’dependent origination’ visualized with thread and cotton, floating through waves among objects. As summer comes after spring, and the summer is followed by fall and winter, and again spring, all are linked together as cause and effect by this thread of ‘dependent origination’. Those the artist met on the street are led to us by such invisible attraction or connection transcending space and time.

Kim executes a three-dimensional projection of her memory and conception on the cotton cloth, recollecting the faces she saw. According to Pratityasamutpada, or dependent origination, one or more of three kinds of emotion – agony, pleasure and an emotion neither painful nor joyful – arises inevitably from all objects humans can perceive. As one of the feelings is provoked in the inner world, one pursues the object that gives him pleasure or a desire to create such an object. And, if an object gives him pleasure, he tries to possess it. In 所有(possession) has two meanings, ‘be’ and ‘being’. If an object one possesses is matter, it is expressed ‘be’ or ‘not be’. If it is thought or feeling, it is expressed ‘become’ or ‘not become’. From the perspective of the latter, being does not exist originally but is formed. Even if an object is classified as lifeless matter, and if the way it is possessed is not by matter but memory or reminiscence, it becomes a living thing born by thought. It is natural that if one thing is not brooded over repetitively, it is forgotten. Kim is an artist who is so smart enough to present her creative sensibility capturing the space and time of a figure in her memory with natural material and sharing this with others.

Greek philosophy defines a human body as a microcosm. Although myriads of universes have experienced eternal creation and extinction, they grow bigger with time. A human being who is but a speck of dust before the magnitude of the universe must not lose the virtue of humility. Kim’s work politely collects our memories of physical time and space where objects stayed, and make them stay in a third place for a while. Her work shows a humanistic aspect, trying to exchange views with objects on their level, and not an absolute one-sided view looking down at them. Cause and connection is required for all things to exist. If cause is a seed, connection is the condition to germinate the seed. The seed of memory she reaps moves to another space by her careful hands and sprouts there for a while. It stays in a new appearance when involved in another connection. Her work’s life force is to keep staying, even for a while.
